Not on view

Schiaparelli's winter 1937-38 collection included many Surrealist elements, including the famous high-heeled shoe hat. This hat, designed one season later and worn by Millicent Rogers, is similar to the famous shoe hat in that it features three-dimensional forms and reflects Schiaparelli's involvement with Surrealism. The shape, which causes the wearer and viewer to question what exactly it is, references historical styles, including traditional Spanish hairstyles worn with large, high combs and late 17th- early 18th-century fontanges.
