Parasol

American

Not on view

This charming parasol belonged to Juliette Geneva Hollenback (1881-1917), the youngest daughter of prominent financier and philanthropist John Welles Hollenback (1834-1923) and may have accompanied dress 2009.300.900. Purchased for Juliette in 1886 during a trip to California by her Aunt Julia, this scaled-down version of an adult's accessory indicates that there was a great deal of fondness between the two women. The fiery color could be seen as a portent of the woman Juliette would become: an active leader in settlement work.
