Standing Bather

Aristide Maillol French

Not on view

Maillol was trained as a painter, but at the outset of his career he was profoundly inspired by medieval tapestries. In the early 1890s, he set up tapestry workshops in his native Banyuls and then in Paris. He also became interested in sculpture and began to carve statuettes in wood. This bronze was cast after one of those statuettes acquired by the Princess Helene Bibesco in 1899 and now in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
