Louis XVI

Philippe Laurent Roland

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 524

One of a set of four roundels made for the Halle aux Draps (Draper's Hall), a 12th-centry building renovated under Louis XVI. The enframement of sunflower and laurel is possibly by Roland, since it accords well with his gilt wood panels with eagles and garlands made for the Château de Bagatelle in 1776 (see 07.225.17a, b).
