Pair of Gauntlets

French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 374

The battle scenes depict soldiers wearing contemporary armor and include banners with the arms of France. These gauntlets are part of an embossed and gilt parade armor that once belonged to the English collector Horace Walpole (1717–1797) at Strawberry Hill, which was among the first Gothic Revival houses in Europe.
