Pair of horses with grooms

Manufactory Meissen Manufactory German

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 533

These porcelain figure groups are distinguished by the high quality of their gilt-bronze bases. Their design reflects the pronounced naturalism that is a hallmark of the German rococo style. Small animals made of enameled lead have been incorporated among the waterfalls, tree stumps, and rockwork, all of which have been executed with great attention to detail.
