Terracotta skyphos (deep drinking cup)

Greek, Euboean

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 171

Unpretentious though they are as objects, skyphoi with pendant semicircles are of considerable archaeological importance for their diffusion throughout the Mediterranean world. Euboea was active in trade and in the establishment of colonies during the eighth and seventh centuries B.C. The distribution of these skyphoi indicates Euboean presence.
