Terracotta pyxis (cosmetic box)

Greek, Boeotian

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 171

The pattern on the box of the pyxis is reminiscent of an organic material such as rush, grass, possibly even wood. Small lidded containers were certainly made of perishable materials that have now entirely disappeared.
