[Mary Warner and Edeltrude on the Brow of a Hill]

Heinrich Kühn Austrian, born Germany

Not on view

Miss Mary is seen here probably in the company of Lotte. In the airy openness of the Tyrolean landscape, accentuated by the low angle of vision, the bent silhouette of the governess seems to call out in concern to the half-visible little figure who has ventured over the crest of the hill. Vertical cloud formations discreetly echo the figures' connectedness. All simplicity and allusion, the image is among Kühn's most felicitous.
