Saint John the Baptist

German

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 305

As forerunner to the coming of Christ, Saint John the Baptist holds a lamb, which symbolizes Christ as the Lamb of God. This sculpture and the statue of Saint John the Evangelist located on the other side of the doorway were two of four statues from a large carved retable.
