Side Drum

Dutch

Not on view

This crude, small drum may have been intended as a toy for a child. The deocration and cheap construction is similar to other drums that were fabricated by Leopold Franciolini at the end of the nineteenth century to appear much older.

Technical description: Shell made of wood bent into a cylinder. Thick and crude overlap, secured by three nails and a cord (like stitches). Rope tension with six knots of string instead of leather tugs. Holes drilled in each counterhoop through which the rope passes. The shell is painted a dark blue. Wooden counterhoops painted with triangles of red, white, and blue. The decoration on the counterhoops, and a coat-of-arms on the shell both suggest the drum may be from Holland. The decoration and construction are similar to other instruments fabricated by Leopold Franciolini.
