Osiris figure

Third Intermediate Period

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 126

This crudely carved figure of Osiris was used as a container for Henettawy's Book of the Dead papyrus (25.3.29). Made of roughgrained sycomore wood, the figure was painted black, with the pedestal on which it was set left the natural color of the wood. A slot for the papyrus was hollowed out in the back; once the papyrus was in place, this was closed by gluing a thick piece of wood over the opening.
