Designer Geoffrey Beene American

Not on view

In the spirit of Pop art, Geoffrey Beene transformed the familiar form of the football jersey into a striking 1960s evening dress, floor length and encrusted with sequins. Appropriating the imagery of popular culture, Beene elevated the everyday by working with opulent embellishments traditionally reserved for evening wear while retaining the relaxed silhouette and strong color combination of his source, a Minnesota Vikings jersey.
