The scene, illustrating an episode in the Old Testament book of Genesis (8:20), was based on an Italian engraving by Marco Dente
(d. 1527), taken in turn from a fresco in the Vatican Loggia, which was completed before 1519 by one of the painters in Raphael’s workshop.
