From Sotheby's catalogue: "Itier was a French civil servant who traveled widely in the course of his work, and recorded the places he visited with daguerreotypes. His visit to China in the early 1840s was detailed in his "Journal d'un Voyage en Chine en 1843, 1844, 1845, et 1846", and the publication was illustrated with views of Canton and Macao taken from daguerreotypes. He left China for Egypt in November 1843, where he was joined in Cairo by his nephew, the Egyptologist Joseph Dubrois-Ayme."
