The Callot sisters established themselves first as purveyors of lace and then rose to prominence making garments incorporating fine lace and other elegant trimmings. This design, however, shows Madame Gerber's ability to design for the prevailing pared-down aesthetic of the 1920s. The overall effect is that of a dress and jacket, although the dress is actually a single garment. The silhouette follows the dropped-waist chemise style of the period and no additional trimmings disrupt the draping of the garment. The use of the large Bakelite buckle indicates that even established couture designers were intrigued by the possible applications in fashion of the first plastic made with synthetic materials.
