On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 899

Attributed to Mainbocher, this half peplum falls into the category of fantasy waist decoration. The buckle is whimsical, alluding to a belt, while the artificial flowers are beautifully made. Both of these details show that the high quality of Mainbocher's workmanship and design continued after his return to the United States from Paris at the start of WWII.
