Bowl with rocks and trees

Japanese, for European market

Not on view

Polygonal bowls with turned out rims such as this example were a favorite export item first from China, and then from Japan. The somewhat fanciful and abbreviated forms of the rocks, plums, maple, and pine trees are much livelier than those found on Japanese porcelains made for domestic use.
