Bust of a bearded man in a cap

Luigi Saulini Italian

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 556

Luigi Saulini first drew his subjects’ portraits, sometimes after sending them to a photographer around the corner. In this bust of an unknown gentleman (it has been mistakenly taken for a self-portrait), he extracted powerful contrast and a sense of volume from the two strata.
