Terracotta amphora (jar)

Attributed to the Botkin Class
Probably by the Phrynos Painter

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 154

Obverse, a youth between two men
Reverse, a woman between two men

The handsome pattern of spirals, palmettes, and a lotos bud under the handles of this vase is similar to that on a vase signed Amasis made me. A number of the craftsmen in the Athenian Kerameikos (potters' quarter) were both potter and painter, and possibly this vase was made by Amasis to be decorated by another artist.
