Terracotta skyphos (deep drinking cup)

Greek, Attic

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 171

Obverse, Athena with goose
Reverse, Nike (the personification of victory) with phiale (libation bowl) and bird

The goose was traditionally associated with Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Here, a startled goose is addressed by Athena. The shape of the skyphos is a special variety with one vertical, one horizontal handle.
