Memory of War Defeat, Ruins on Dockyard in Toyokawa, Aichi

Shomei Tomatsu Japanese

Not on view

Tōmatsu Shōmei’s early photographic series capture the upheavals of postwar Japan, including the nation’s economic and diplomatic shifts as well as its devastation. These two photographs were taken in 1959: One shows the wartime destruction that remained more than a decade after the conflict. The other image documents the prevalence of flood damage in the Japanese islands and its impact on rural citizens near the artist’s hometown.

On display for rotation 3.
