Shomei Tomatsu Japanese

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 232

In two of his best-known series, Asphalt, from the 1960s, and Plastics, dating to the late 1980s, Tōmatsu Shōmei gathered the personal effects of anonymous individuals to suggest something of their lives and their impact on the environment. This photograph shows colorful litter washed ashore Kujūkiri Beach in Chiba Prefecture, near where the artist lived at the time.

On view for rotation 4.
