This is a nineteenth-century copy of a sixteenth-century manuscript illustrating the equipment required for various forms of the tournament as practiced in Germany and Austria during the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Three contemporary copies, probably all made about 1550–70 by the Augsburg painter Jeremias Schem(m)el, survive today in the collections of the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel and in the Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, respectively. The Metropolitan Museum’s example was copied from the Vienna manuscript in 1838, then part of the Habsburg collections at Ambras Castle, by Friedrich Otto von Leber (1803-1846), an early Austrian scholar of arms and armor.
