Tympanum of a Pejeng-Type Drum

Indonesia (Sumba)

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 244

A distinctive style of drum was made in Indonesia that was hourglass-shaped with separately cast and soldered tympanum that overhang the body. In this fragmentary example, the central star design of the top seems to be bordered by stylized feathers and the large outer band of decoration, comprised of a series of interlocking meanders, probably represents birds.
