Flower and Rock

Zeng Xi Chinese

Not on view

Zeng Xi says in his inscription that this painting was inspired by Li Shan (Li Futang, 1686–after 1760). One has only to look at the painting by Ren Xiong at the beginning of this exhibition, also said to be done in the style of Li Shan, to recognize that style is in the brush of the beholder.

Zeng's intense frenzy of brushwork wonderfully conveys the earth's force stored in the old rock.
