Tomb Slab of a Monk (Father Louis)

French

On view at The Met Cloisters in Gallery 09

The knotted cord distinguishes this figure as a Franciscan friar. The legible part of the inscription, which may date later and thus suggests reuse of the tomb slab, provides his name: HIC IACET VENERAND PATER LVDOVICS (Here lies venerable Father Louis).
