Push Plate

Albert Paley American

Not on view

Paley's push plate rivals Hector Guimard's turn-of-the-twentieth-century metalwork for its free-flowing exuberance. Like the French architect-designer, he used elaborately sinuous but durable metal detailing to embellish heavily trafficked commercial interiors; this piece, which attached to a glass door, comes from a restaurant in suburban Washington, D.C.
