Petri was among a group of modernist ceramists that found factories to manufacture their contemporary, unornamented tableware in the 1930s. The breakthrough came when Gunther von Pechmann became director of the Staatliche Porzellan-manufaktur, Berlin in 1929 and commissioned Petri and other young designers to produce new objects.
