Beacons of Defense

Raymond Steth American

Not on view

This remarkable lithograph was made at the WPA's Fine Print Workshop of Philadelphia where the young and talented Steth worked under experienced printmaker Dox Thrash. Its subject—America preparing for war—was one of a number of war-related prints that the Workshop produced at the request of the federal government. Filling the space with a multitude of vignettes showing workers in factories, navy yards, textile mills, and oil fields, the overlapping beacons of light draw attention to the positive contributions made by African Americans during World War II.
