Fragment of a Paddle Doll

Middle Kingdom–Early New Kingdom

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 109

This fragmentary “paddle doll” was found in Tomb MMA 511 along with parts of three female statuettes (see 26.3.231 & 26.3.232; the third was deaccessioned). The top of this figure’s elongated torso is broken; what remains is decorated with a geometrically pattered garment that ends above a large pubic triangle. Indications of legs are painted on the lower part of the doll.
