Holy Shrine Flower Basket (Hanakago)

Iizuka Rōkansai Japanese

Not on view

This flower basket of leached and split blond bamboo features openwork passages created with a combination of traditional techniques, including twining (nawame-ami) and hemp leaf–pattern plaiting (asa-no-ha ami). Its shape recalls that of an ancient ash-glazed pot or bronze urn, while the title refers to the treasure house (or sanctuary) of a Shinto shrine.
