Gustav III’s early arrival at Versailles, on June 7, 1784, meant that Louis XVI had to improvise his selection of presents; the Swedish royal received multiple pieces from Marie Antoinette’s own "Colorful Frieze" service, including this tureen. The whole gift of porcelain was put on private view before it was delivered to Gustav. A British tourist described being especially impressed with the "gilded and excellently painted" service she and her husband saw that June.
