Not on view

This chromolithograph of the continent's oldest open-pit copper mine and largest man-made excavation relates to a major photo-work in the Met collection by Earthworks artist Robert Smithson, namely his "Bingham Copper Mining Pit--Utah" of 1973 (See 2001.293). The subject of Smithson's piece is a proposed land reclamation project of the mine seen here around 1930, at a time when the mine was still active and not yet a spent industrial site that Smithson sought to transform.
