Daf

Iranian

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 681

Frame drums are used throughout the world to augment voice and instrumental music in secular and sacred contexts. A mainstay of many West Asian classical ensembles, the daf’s varied timbres and tones coupled with complex rhythms may help to induce a meditative state or ecstatic trance.
