To Fu, some of the happiest times in his life occurred during his wartime sojourn in Chongqing. Twenty years later, experiencing Chongqing with a new purpose, Fu focused on a densely populated city undergoing rapid social and economic change. Smoke billows from ships on the Yangzi River and from factories in different parts of the city. “Appearing like heaven and earth turned upside down, the changes to our homeland have been tremendous,” Fu commented.
