Enthroned Bodhisattva Manjushri as Sita Manjughosa

Southern Thailand

Not on view

Manjushri is depicted with his hands in the boon-granting gesture, thereby proclaiming himself to be in the Sita Manjughosa form. He is seated in royal ease on a lotus cushion with lion supports, framed by a pearl-edged nimbus that emits flames. The blue lotus (nilotpala) stem and flower, which wend their way from the savior’s left hand, support Manjushri’s two emblems: the sacred palm-leaf book, which evokes his role as the embodiment of transcendent wisdom, and the sword rising from it, with which he vanquishes delusions.
