Not on view

Lyle Ashton Harris is a multimedia artist who works in photography, video, and performance. Growing up in the Bronx in a family of photographers, he had ready access to cameras and extensive family picture archives. After a transformative trip to Amsterdam to visit his filmmaker brother, he returned home committed to picture making and began his first major body of work, Americas. Wearing white face makeup and a light-colored wig, Harris posed for the camera in motion, often screaming and almost naked. The bold photographs established his reputation and launched his now thirty-three year exploration of the medium as a tool of self-expression.
