Sigma-shaped table with relief border depicting the Birth of Aphrodite and a Marine Thiasos

Acquired by Dr. Lewis Dubroff at auction from Sotheby’s London on November 19, 2017. According to Sotheby’s, sold by a descendant of Khalil Rabenou (1906 – 1961), a dealer in New York who owned the table when seen by Professor Ernst Kitzinger of Harvard in 1958 (confirmed in a publication of 1966 and by letters in the Kitzinger archive at The Getty). In a letter of December 5, 1955 in the Rabenou files provided by Sotheby’s, Roger Khawam, Antiquities & Jewels, Cairo wrote that the table was from west of the village of Matai (Matay) in Minya province. Sotheby’s said the seller reported that Rabenou acquired the table from the dealers Vincent and Olga Diniacopoulos who acquired works in Egypt in the early twentieth century before ultimately moving to Canada.
