Cho Hyonchi Japanese

Not on view

This self-published book is Hyonchi Cho’s only known work. The subjects are mostly anxious young people seen on the streets in the commercial districts of Tokyo. The snapshot aesthetic, picture tiling, and dense-black gravure printing show the direct influence of Western photographers such as William Klein. A poetic epigraph, presumably by Cho, sets the spirit: "I participated. Therefore, I go insane. / Respect to the men / Battle with the men / This is the prelude."
