The hieratic, almost two-dimensional cuts of Turkish robes are alluded to but modified by Rouff in her evening coat. Of course, the ceremonial style of the Turkish court can also be explained by the contemporary vogue for a softened A-line skirt. Modernism's unremitting progress in the 1920s and 1930s could seem mitigated and justified by the collateral referencing to the Turkish style.
