Bowl with peony design

North Central Thailand, Si Satchanalai, Ko Noi

Not on view

This deep bowl is a handsome example of the characteristic iron-decoration stoneware ceramics produced at the Si Satchanalai kilns in north-central Thailand. The central design shows a stemmed flower in bloom surrounded by flourishes of leaves. An extended version of the same motif appears as a continuous design in the cavetto with a cloud-chain border on the rim. The painted décor is in an iron-rich solution beneath a clear glaze, tinged green by the presence of iron. In its fluid brushwork painting, the design emulates Chinese blue-and white porcelains of the later fifteenth century.
