Comtesse de la Châtre (Marie Charlotte Louise Perrette Aglaé Bontemps, 1762–1848)

Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 632

The countess (1762–1848) was an only child who inherited an enormous fortune through a family connection. Married advantageously and unhappily, she divorced in 1793, after the process was legalized in France, and was later married again, to her longtime companion, the marquis de Jaucourt. Her exquisite dress and fichu are made from an abundance of figured white muslin and her straw hat has a deep crown and a profusion of bows. She is dressed in the English fashion.
