Fragmentary Stele with Orant Monk
Not on view
A haloed figure raises his hands in prayer. He wears the short cloak of a monk; the scarf may also be an item of monastic dress or of a deacon. His halo identifies him as a saint. The stele was originally covered with a thin layer of plaster and painted; the monk’s name might have been written on the unadorned rectangle over his head. The once full-length figure may have marked a grave or been a stone icon.
