This is one of a series of eighty-two enamel placques, fifteen of which are in the Museum's collection, recounting episodes from Virgil's Aeneid. The immediate sources for the enameler were the woodcut illustrations in Sebastian Brandt's edition of Virgil's works, printed by Johann Grüninger in Strasbourg in 1502.
