The Dream of Aeneas
Salvator Rosa (Italian, Neapolitan, 1615–1673)
Oil on canvas; 77 1/2 x 47 1/2 in. (196.9 x 120.7 cm)
Rogers Fund, 1965 (65.118)

The painting represents a scene from Virgil's Aeneid (VIII: 26ff). Aeneas, having fallen asleep on the bank of the Tiber, sees the river god in a dream; the deity foretells the imminent end of his trials and the conquest of Latium. A number of preliminary drawings for the painting are known. A variant of the composition, in reverse, was etched by Rosa about 1663, and the painting seems to date from the same time. From 1832 to 1965, it was at Northwich Park (England) in the Northwich and Spencer-Churchill collections.
