Candlestick, 16th century
Europe, possibly Venice
Brass engraved and inlaid with silver; 7 1/2 x 7 in. (19.1 x 17.8 cm)
Gift of J. Pierpont Morgan, 1917 (17.190.637)

Both the bulbous profile and assembly of its parts distinguish this European candlestick from its smaller Islamic models. Its surface ornamentation—the scrolling stems, rhomboid knots, quatrefoils, and strapwork panels—however, is similar to Islamic metalwork, especially the work of Mahmud al-Kurdi.
