This is one of a large group of Venetian round lacquered leather shields with Ottoman-inspired motifs, some of which may have been employed by the bodyguard of Wolf-Dietrich von Raitenau, prince-archbishop of Salzburg from 1587 to 1612. The exterior is overlaid with thin leather with tooled ornament in low relief; the design is further embellished with silver leaf that has been given a golden hue by means of a translucent yellow varnish.
