(New York—November 13, 2012) Andrew Solomon has been elected to the Board of Trustees of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, it was announced today by Daniel Brodsky, the Museum’s Chairman. Mr. Solomon’s election took place at the November 13 meeting of the Board.
An award-winning author of numerous books, essays, and articles in the fields of art, international politics, and mental health, Mr. Solomon is a contributing editor at Travel and Leisure magazine and has also been a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine. He has written five books, most recently Far from the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity, coincidentally published the same day as his election to the Board of the Museum. His 2001 book The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression has been translated into two dozen languages worldwide and won the National Book Award. He is a lecturer in psychiatry at Cornell University and a special advisor to the Yale Department of Psychiatry. He is enrolled in the doctoral program in psychology at Cambridge University.
“Mr. Solomon has been a true and steadfast friend of the Museum in countless ways for more than three decades, and I look forward to working with him in his new role as a member of the Board,” Mr. Brodsky said.

Over the intervening years, his energetic commitment to the institution and his wide-ranging interests—from the art of classical antiquity to Old Master paintings, to Asian art—have been both unwavering and exemplary.”
At the Metropolitan, Mr. Solomon is a member of Chairman’s Council, Philodoroi, Amati, and the Friends of Asian Art. He also serves on boards and committees at the Alex Fund, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Columbia University Medical Center, Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, Depression Center at the University of Michigan, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, New York Public Library, PEN American Center, Trans Youth Family Allies, the William Alanson White Institute for Psychoanalysis, World Monuments Fund, and Yaddo. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the New York Institute for the Humanities, and he is a fellow of the British-American Project.
