Girdle of Ares
Begun by 1908, this is one of many compositions in which Davies placed figures in agitated poses. The title of this work refers to the Greek god of war, Ares. Its subject and treatment are reminiscent of Italian quattrocento painting and engravings. The painting was unfinished when shown in 1908 at the exhibition of "The Eight" held at Macbeth Gallery in New York. After traveling with this exhibition for a year, it was returned to the artist and completed sometime before its acquisition in 1914.
